Federico Faggin's Signature
In the first version of the 4004, Federico Faggin placed his initials inside the 4004. A few months later he modified the 4004 and since the changes needed the area where the original signature was, he moved it to the edge of the chip. All production 4004 had the signature on the edge of the chip. Faggin also christened the chips with distinct names: 4001, 4002, 4003 and 4004, breaking away from the numbering scheme used by Intel at that time. According to that scheme, the chips would have required the names 1302, 1105, 1507 and 1202 respectively, not giving the sense that they were part of a coherent family of components.
